Und so traurig, öd′ und leer!
Rauhe Winde weh′ n von Norden
Und die Sonne scheint nicht mehr.
(August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben, 1798-1874)

I've always wanted to experience Goðafoss in winter, but when I was there I actually felt like I was in the poem by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben: it was bitterly cold, a strong wind was blowing from the north-east and it was snowing almost non-stop . While the waterfall was a spectacular sight, I wished there was some color in the sky at sunrise and sunset. - Realisiert mit Pictrs.comUNESCO world heritage pile dwellings | Snow on Lake Constance doesn't happen very often. Miraculously, however, it had snowed a little on the Saturday before the third Advent in 2022 and everything was covered with a little white sugar. For a long time I had thought about where to photograph this rare event. My choice fell on the pile dwellings in Unteruhldingen, a place where I have not often photographed. Surprisingly, it had cleared up during the night - the morning was freezing cold, but the mood was very nice. - Realisiert mit Pictrs.comholidays are coming | The first snow of winter in my region, freshly fallen the evening before, creates a beautiful atmosphere around Neuschwanstein Castle with the fog - Realisiert mit Pictrs.comice age | For this picture I would have liked some ground fog ...
The morning was clear and cold (the thermometer at the location showed -22°C), and I was hoping for perfect conditions, as there is often a bit of fog at this location and at these temperatures the trees are white with hoar frost. But when I drove onto the highway, I could already see a thick bank of high fog in the direction of travel - I wanted the fog below and not above! Fortunately, shortly before Füssen it became clear that this high fog did not quite reach the mountains. Nevertheless, when I arrived, the entire sky over the church was gray, the mountains could not be seen, but at exactly the right time the clouds of fog cleared and gave a view of the mountain tops.
Nevertheless, a little ground fog would have created a mystical atmosphere and more hoarfrost on the trees. - Realisiert mit Pictrs.comin expectation | For a long time, high fog also had the highest heights of the Black Forest under control - the hoar frost on the trees is evidence of this. A strong wind brings a change, for the first time the sun rises again. Wind and sun bring hope for the trees to be relieved of their heavy burden... - Realisiert mit Pictrs.comdancing trees | Once again a trip to the Windbuchen on the Schauinsland near Freiburg im Breisgau. I had hoped to be above the fog and catch a glimpse of color in the sky, but the foggy atmosphere also had its charm. In any case, great to experience a little winter. - Realisiert mit Pictrs.comdancing lights | my one-week stay in Lofoten was - as always when I am there - shaped by wind. Miraculously, the wind paused that night for the duration of the Northern Lights spectacle and the water came to rest so that the landscape and the Northern Lights could be reflected in the fjord. Just a few minutes later, wind sets in and waves start again... - Realisiert mit Pictrs.comSnow-White and Rose-Red | The red rorbuer of Hamnøy present themselves in a fresh white dress on this cloudy morning from a classic perspective - Realisiert mit Pictrs.comthe red huts | This is the "back" of the village Hamnøy in Lofoten - a little further to the left is the harbor of the fishing village. On this cloudy morning, the red fishermen's huts are the only splash of color in the otherwise monochrome landscape... - Realisiert mit Pictrs.comswirling fog | It took a long time until I could make useful pictures of northern lights. So far, either the foreground was not suitable or the landscape in the picture too dark or the picture quality bad or all together. At last, everything went well together on this Lofoten journey, even though the Northern Lights forecast was anything but good. This picture was taken the first night - the lights came early, I was still on my way to the quarters and was (as so often) surprised by the lights. Nevertheless, to the fast I found even a quite acceptable foreground - Realisiert mit Pictrs.comChristmas Wonderland I | There must be two conditions for this motif: it must be Advent or Christmas time, otherwise there is no Christmas tree in front of the church and there must be snow because of the Christmas mood.
Both at the same time is unfortunately not always to be found in our latitudes and this year was also the Advent season quite short. So when it had snowed heavily on the 28th of December and thawing was forecasted for the time after, I decided to take the opportunity. At half past two at night I left for the morning blue hour in Berchtesgaden. At the time, I was fortunate enough to be alone in this place. Some time later, in daylight, the place was besieged by whole groups of people... - Realisiert mit Pictrs.comChristmas Wonderland II | The special charm of this small chapel high above Berchtesgaden lies in the view of the Watzmann. At Christmas time, the small Christmas tree with its lights completes the picture. This motif is so popular that up to ten photographers jostled for the best seats in front of the church. No wonder, because snowfall on the day before had provided for a fresh snowy landscape and for the following days they forecasted thawing... - Realisiert mit Pictrs.com
